MACKINAW TOWNSHIP

May 17, 2005 Regular Board Meeting

The regular meeting of the Mackinaw Township Board was held on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 at 10595 Wallick Road, Mackinaw City, Michigan. Supervisor Dean called meeting to order at 7:30 P.M. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll Call: Present: Bertchinger, Rogala, Dean, Keck, David

Absent: None

Guest: Nanette Keck, Eric Jacobson

Agenda stands as presented.

Minutes of April 19 meeting corrected as follows: City added on second line and the seventh paragraph on second page should read as follows: The consensus was not to participate in the grant application.

First item under Unfinished Business concerned the Memorial Garden Plaque- After a short discussion, a motion was brought forward by Bertchinger to purchase a plaque with the following wording: In loving memory of Evelyn Dexel, donated by Ward G. Dexel and family. Keck supported this motion. All aye, motion carried. The plaque will also have the date of the land donation and will be mounted on a bench.

Further discussion was held on type of collage to be assembled for the wall inside the hall, which will acknowledge the contribution by the Hennecke family and showcase some of the photos from the dedication.

Spring Clean-up Day is set and notices have been posted including the Web Site. The sign has been placed at the site. Dean will call and try to set date for next year’s Clean-up Day so it can be posted.

The 425 agreement was briefly discussed with the agreement that the MTA legal staff should be consulted as to the township liability if they refuse to agree to these agreements.

Bertchinger reported a conversation with Nancy Campbell concerning attendance at a township meeting to report on the Mackinaw Area Public Library. Campbell will attend a township meeting at least once each quarter. Motion by Bertchinger, second by Davis to appoint Nancy Campbell as township representative for Mackinaw Library Board. All aye, motion carried.

Bertchinger reported on property available for township to purchase before it goes up for tax sale. The lots are part of a development on Hebron Mail Route, which consists of several small lots. Many of these lots are now owned by the State of Michigan. Motion by Rogala, second by Davis to send a letter to present property owners and the State of Michigan exploring possibility of these lots being donated to the township. On a vote of 4 to 1, motion carried.

Keck briefly reviewed the election held in May. Only 6.5% of the registered voters chose to vote in this election. This was the lowest percentage of the four districts in the area.

Bertchinger presented Treasurer’s Report as follows:

Bills for May meeting were reviewed and motion by Bertchinger, second by Davis that bills be accepted as presented. All aye, motion carried.

Keck reported that Wallick Road had been treated with Afton stone on the day of the meting (May 17) after Dean had reported a request from a resident. There has also been a favorable response from the Taratuta’s concerning the ditch near their property.

A request from the Mackinaw Band Boosters for inclusion in their calendar was brought before the Board. Motion by Keck, second by Davis that two calendars being purchased. All aye, motion carried.

Two questions briefly discussed were: A form to use if someone wants to make a donation to the township – and how the Memorial Garden should be developed.
